    Julie’s Fresh Fish Pita’s

    By oceanjewels | Blog, Recipes | Comments are Closed | 4 October, 2011 | 0

Falafel and shawarma’s are some of my favourite foods, bringing back memories of when Hubby and I were first dating and we’d visit Ardi’s in Kenilworth for a late night snack after a night out, not really wanting the night to end!

So I don’t stay up the whole night any more and tend to stay away from fast food chains (these things happen when you grow up). I do however enjoy the falafel from the guys at the Neighbourgoods market but I always wondered if I could make it with fish. So after getting some advise from the ‘all-knowing’ Twitterverse I created the fish Pita and even if I do say so myself the result is delicious, the flavours combine very well and the result is a fun, healthy, tasty, rather messy dinner enjoyed by all.

    Julie’s Fresh Fish Pita’s

Serves 4, with 1 pita bread each

    The Tzatziti
    1 English cucumber
    2 cloves garlic, crushed
    250ml Greek yogurt
    Salt and pepper

Grate the cucumber, place in a colander and allow to strain for 1/2 an hour, some of the excess liquid will drip off, you can also push down on the cucumber with a spoon to increase the amount of liquid that comes off.
Combine the the cucumber, yogurt and garlic.
    Season with salt and pepper.

    The Hummus
    1 can chickpeas
1/2 the liquid from the chickpeas
    4 Tbsp lemon juice
    1 1/2 tsp tahini
    2 cloves garlic, crushed
    Salt
    2 Tbsp olive oil

Drain the chickpeas and set aside the liquid from can.
Combine all the ingredients except the liquid.
Use a hand blender or food processor and blend until you have a smooth paste, adding the chickpea liquid as needed.

    The fish
800gr White fish, I used Angelfish but Cob, Cape Salmon, Gurnard, Kingklip and Yellowtail would also be delicious
    2 tsp cumin
    1 tsp coriander
    pinch cinnamon
    pinch salt
    Olive oil
Combine the spices with the olive oil
    Rub on the fish

Heat a little olive oil in a non stick pan.
Fry the fish in batches until cooked, this will take 3 – 8 minutes depending on the thickness. The fish will flake when cooked.

    The Assembly
Heat the Pita, either in an oven or toaster.
Split the Pita and spread with Hummus.
Top with the cooked fish and spoon lashings of the tzatziki over the fish
Enjoy with plenty of fresh coriander.

Eat these deliciously tasty healthy treats for lunch or light supper with a salad and have plenty of napkins close at hand. These would also make delicious picnic food, packed into paper bags with the tops folded over to keep the fillings inside.
